Avis rentalcars New Zealand - hire conditions

Minimum Age
Minimum Rental age is 21 years, with a Tour Rate Voucher.
Rates Include
Unlimited kilometres, Motor Vehicle Insurance and Goods and Services Tax (GST) of 12.5%.
Rates Exclude
Delivery Fees, Airport Concession Recovery Fees (see below) miscellaneous charges, additional insurances, petrol and GST on these charges.
Airport Concession Recovery Fees
During the period of these Terms and Conditions, an Airport Concession Recovery Fee of NZ$17.00 plus GST PER HIRE will apply for all hires commencing or terminating at an Avis NZ airport or ferry location. This surcharge is payable directly to Avis at the time of rental.
Peak Season Surcharge
A surcharge of $10 including GST per day will apply to all rentals commencing during the month of February 2006.
Country Locations
Remote Location Surcharge of $50.00 plus GST is applicable to rentals commencing at these locations: Greymouth, Hokitika, Westport, Whangarei, Gisborne on all Car Groups.
Insurance Excess
In the case of damage to the vehicle the renter is liable for an insurance excess.
The amount of the excess is $1900 plus GST for ALL car groups. This is required as a bond and preferably paid by credit card although cash is accepted.
This excess amount can be reduced to $225 plus GST by purchasing Excess Reduction at commencement of the rental, either separately or as part of an insurance protection package. The charge for Excess Reduction only is $19 plus GST per day for car groups A-E and $21 plus GST per day for car groups P-V.
Please note: If Excess Reduction Insurance or Insurance Protection Package is purchased your clients will receive complete cover for windscreen damage –which means the excess is fully waived.
The insurance protection package is NZ $23 plus GST per day Groups A –E and NZ $25 plus GST per day Group V and P which includes Excess Reduction Insurance, Personal Accident Insurance and Personal Effects and Baggage Insurance.
Petrol Bond
A petrol bond of NZ$100.00 plus GST will be collected at the commencement of the rental and refunded on finalisation, less the charge of topping up the fuel tank. Preferably by credit card but cash is accepted.
Continuous Hire Policy
Vehicles cannot be picked up in one island and left in another. When travelling between islands, changeover vehicles are supplied in Wellington (WL4) in the North Island and Picton (PN6) in the South Island. As well, Avis New Zealand will allow this between Rotorua (ROT) and Christchurch (CHC) and vice versa. The changeover service will be calculated as one continuous hire, providing the next vehicle is picked up within 5 hours. Minimum 5 days notice is required for the changeover service and a minimum hire period of 3 days in each island applies. Continuous hires are not available in any other areas of the country.
Speciality Vehicle
Group V - Luxury Van, Group P – 4WD
Minimum hire period for a Group V and P, is five days in each island. (Normal two island conditions apply).
Rental Period
A minimum three (3) day rental period applies. Daily rates are based on 24 hour periods.
Drivers Licence Requirements
A valid driver’s license must have been held by the renter for a minimum of one year. Learners or provisional licenses are not acceptable. An international driving permit must be presented in conjunction with any license in non-roman alphabet.
Additional Authorised Driver
Additional authorised drivers have to be registered on the rental agreement. There is no extra charge for additional authorised drivers. Minimum rental age for additional authorised drivers will be the same as for the renter.
Upgrade/Extension of Rentals
Voluntary extension of rentals notified to Avis at the time of rental will be charged at local applicable rates. If a customer decides to upgrade at the time of rental, the charge will be at local applicable rates. This service is available for customers who decide at the time of the rental to use the vehicle for a longer period than reserved. Additional hours are charged at 1/3 of the daily rate to a maximum of 3 hours when an additional day will be charged.
Dangerous South and North Island Roads
Please note that you are not permitted to drive on the following dangerous roads. There is no insurance cover for damage to the vehicle driven on these roads, regardless whether you purchased the Excess Reduction Insurance (ER) or not.
- TASMAN VALLEY ROAD
This road runs from Mount Cook Village to the Blue Lakes. It is unsealed and prone to avalanches. You may drive to Mount Cook Village (The Hermitage) but no further.
- CATLINS AREA
This road runs between Tokanui and Owaka (Southern Scenic Route through the Catlins area in the very south eastern corner of the South Island). For a 25km stretch on this road exists an unsealed section. In recent times has seen a high incidence of accidents.
- SKIPPERS ROAD
A very dangerous, narrow mountain road near Queenstown. There is a sign at the entrance to this road stating that there is no insurance cover for rental cars.
